Wine Consumption: United States is now the world’s biggest consumer of wine edging past France for the first time drinking about 13% of all the wine produced in the world. According to International Vine and Wine organization, U.S. consumers bought 29 million hectolitres of wine in 2013 while the French consumed about 28 million hectolitres. Although the U.S. leads in total wine consumption, the per capita consumption of wine in the U.S. is still behind that of France. The average French person consumes 1.2 bottles a week, which is about six times more than what an average U.S. person consumes.
Passion for Italian Wine: U.S. wine consumers are drinking more Italian wine than what Italians drink themselves. The popularity of Italian wines in the U.S. is attributable to the classic Italian reds, which include the “three-Big-Bs” (Barolo, Barbaresco and Brunello), and the growing popularity of sparkling wine from Italy (Prosecco).
World Production of Wine: Italy is the world’s largest producer of wine followed by Spain and France. However, France remains the top exporter of wine valued at $10.7 billion. Overall, world wine consumption fell by 1% but output rose by 9% because of record production from the new wine producing countries like the U.S., Chile, Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand.
