As part of a corporate reorganization, Google-founders, Larry Page and Sergei Brin, announced last week that they are promoting an internal candidate, Sundar Pichai, as the company’s new CEO. Although Pichai becomes the new CEO of Google, the founders of the company will continue to retain control. Under the restructuring, a new parent company “Alphabet” is being created which would have several subsidiaries including a smaller version of Google focused on internet-based products/services. When asked about the name Alphabet, Larry Page added it was a play on words — the new company is a “bet” on “alpha” where Alpha is generally considered as the investment return in excess of a benchmark return.
Born in South India, Sundar Pichai moved to the U.S. in 1993 to continue his studies in Stanford and U Penn before joining Google in 2004. Over the next decade, Pichai lead the growth of some of the highly successful and visible Google products including the Google Toolbar, Chrome browser, Google Apps, and Android. This trend of picking internal candidates who are relatively unknown to the world outside the company is not an isolated event. The CEOs of Microsoft Corp., Google Inc., Nokia Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc are Nadella, Pichai, Suri and Narayen who ascended from within the company after moving to the U.S. from India.
The leading technology companies, most of which are based in the U.S., have been successful in attracting some of the brightest minds from India, Russia and China over the last few decades. As the migrant talent begins to thrive within the company, and leadership skills are assessed more accurately, more and more migrant talent is being recognized in the top leadership roles, which also underscores why the world’s sharpest minds are so eager to migrate to the U.S.
